Hiking on the Big Island

This place is known as a caldera.

It is where a volcano has exploded.

This volcano erupted in 1952.

In 1952 it had an enormous lava fountain.

It blew 804 feet high.

We hiked down into the caldera and across.

We thought these upcoming ferns were pretty cool.

It was so rocky and dreary, but so cool.

Me in the dreary caldera.

Liz and Dave.

Vegetation was so sparse in the caldera.

By the end of our hike we could tell that this lava flow came from a really hot spew.
It comes out smoother when it is hotter.

It was a fun hike.
