The History of the Tie

Ties originated from Croatia.

I found this intriguing because the French word for tie is cravat.

Croats are the people Croatia is named after.

The French word for Croatian is croate.

 Cravat - sounds and awful lot like Croat to me.

Well, there is a reason for that. Back in the day, the Croat ladies gave their soldier boyfriends and husbands scarves as a reminder of them when they went to war.

The Croats fought a war with the French, who are always at the epicenter of fashion.

The French liked them so much that they started wearing them

and these are the roots of the modern day tie.
